Useful Information

Accounting questions, answered.

Straightforward answers to some of the questions individuals and business owners ask us most often.

Do I need to use Making Tax Digital?
Making Tax Digital for Income Tax is being introduced in stages for qualifying sole traders and landlords. Those with qualifying income over £50,000 entered from April 2026, followed by more than £30,000 from April 2027 and more than £20,000 from April 2028. Different rules apply depending on your circumstances, so we can help you determine what applies to you.
How long should accounting and tax records be kept?
The answer depends on the type of records involved. Limited companies will generally need to retain relevant tax and accounting records for six years from the end of the financial year they relate to, while PAYE records are generally kept for three years from the end of the relevant tax year. Some circumstances require records to be kept longer.
How can I legally reduce my tax bill?
Good tax planning starts with understanding your circumstances. Depending on the situation, legitimate business expenses, allowances, reliefs, pension contributions and the way income is taken from a business may all be relevant. The right approach depends on the individual or business, which is why planning before a decision is made can be valuable.
When do I need to register for VAT?
The current UK VAT registration threshold is £90,000 of taxable turnover. Registration can also depend on expected future turnover and certain special circumstances, while businesses below the threshold may sometimes register voluntarily. We can help you assess whether registration is required or worthwhile.
How much should I put aside for tax?
There isn't one percentage that works for everyone. The amount depends on factors such as your business structure, profits, other income and how you take money from the business. Keeping tax money separate and updating your estimate as the year develops can make upcoming liabilities easier to manage.
What are the main tax and company filing deadlines?
Deadlines depend on what you need to file. Online Self Assessment returns are generally due by 31 January following the end of the tax year. For established private limited companies, annual accounts are normally due nine months after the financial year end, Corporation Tax is usually due nine months and one day after the accounting period ends, and the Company Tax Return is usually due within twelve months. Different rules can apply in the first year and in other circumstances.
